Guest Mix: pyxis

Twenty years deep in the music industry and channelling a deep knowledge of all things D&B, pyxis’ forays into production over the last two years have established her as one of the scene’s best up and coming liquid producers. With releases for Goldfat, Soul Deep, Eloisa and Liquid Drops plus her excellent work on the Headsbass / Beats in Mind project we jumped at the chance to get a guest mix!

As you’d expect this one is melodic vibes through and through, the perfect soundtrack to the current crop of sunny weather here in the UK. Smooth and rolling, just how we like it! As always you can check out the mix via Soundcloud below or head to Youtube or iTunes to stream. You can also grab a download from Google Drive.

Ben Verse – Crashing Cars EP [Rebel Music]

The often debated status of MCs within the D&B scene is certainly a hot-topic on certain D&B-focused Facebook groups and message boards, where detractors are prone to question the artistry of the scene’s lyricists. We’re sure said-lyricists have better things to do than concern themselves with online bad-mouthing, but nonetheless the emergence of more MC-led releases seems to provide a suitable riposte to the naysayers.

Ben Verse joins that burgeoning tradition with four great new cuts for Rebel Music. Production comes courtesy of a selection of up and coming talents with Wingz, Inner Terrain, Creatures and Screamarts providing a beat each. All four producers provide weighty but retrained sonics, allowing the lyrical content space to breath and Ben ample opportunity to flex his vocal chords.

That vocal style is nothing short of compelling too; smooth and controlled, varying from melancholy and introspective to pressing and insistent. If Verse hasn’t already caught your attention via his previous appearances with the likes of Maztek, Icicle, Calyx & Teebee and of course Pendulum then this EP surely should; hit up Beatport to grab it right now.

Get To Know: Lossless Music

The brainchild of Soul Intent, Lossless Music began life as many such artist-run labels do – as an outlet for Alex’s own productions. That changed in a big way from 2016 onwards, as Lossless began to welcome other artists to the roster both on the main imprint and two other sub-labels – Exkursions, for more leftfield D&B, and Dope Plates for old-school jungle and rave-tinged outings.

Whether it’s his own work or that of other producers, the label trifecta has gone from strength to strength and shows no sign of stopping. Read on for five of our favourites from the Lossless vaults…

Classic Track: Hidden Agenda – History Remastered Part 1

Dispatch start their celebration of 20 years in the game this month with a selection of remasters from the earliest releases on the label, provided by brothers Jason aka Nos (original label founder) & Mark Goodings aka Max Fresh of Hidden Agenda.

This package provides a superb time capsule, teleporting us back to the deeper end of the D&B sound in the early 2000s; a huge contrast to the current Dispatch sound. Where today’s productions tend to be defined by dark bassline science and precision impact drums, these tracks were built around funk breaks and much subtler sub grooves, and that sound still has a freshness to it today.

Highlights include the bouncy vibes of Shut Down, the spacey funk of 9.30 and bright synth stabs of Chase Sequence, but doubtless everyone will find their own favourites in a diverse selection. Check it out below and hit up the Dispatch Bandcamp to grab a copy now!
