Mtwn – Embers EP [Diffrent Music]

Belgian duo Mtwn return to Diffrent Music with a fantastic new release featuring top class production and some really interesting ideas. Embers kicks the EP off with a cracking progression from deep, sombre half-step with a cheeky riff that sounds like a 90s hardcore line run through the washing machine a few times, before morphing into a frenzy of break chopping that brought an instant smile to this reviewer’s face!

The Diffrent family get involved on the oddly titled Tales of a Tonka Truck Driver, with Arkaik, Dexta and Mauoq all lending their studio chops to an angular and moody slice of halftime D&B driven along by super tight percussion. Spinal Groove sees Mtwn continuing that theme, contrasting darker bass and drum elements against soft, ethereal pad sounds to great effect. Last up, Four brings a sparse but effective groove that should get more than a few heads nodding along at the speakers.

The release is out right now via the Diffrent Bandcamp so check the clips below and go grab it!

Sam Binga – Wasted Days LP [Critical Music]

UK dance music’s cross-pollination of musical styles and influences has contributed to the excitement, longevity and innovation of the scene from the very genesis of rave in the late 80s, with everything from jazz to metal at some point playing its part in the evolution of some corner of the electronic sound. Perhaps the strongest of those influences though is that of dub and reggae, without which it’s difficult to imagine the early Jungle sound ever having emerged at all.

All of which brings us to Sam Binga and his new LP, Wasted Days. To say that Jamaican soundsystem culture informs this album would be a vast understatement; while there are many other elements being smashed into the aural supercollider that is Binga’s sound, the reverberations from Kingston can be felt everywhere from the patois of the vocals to the deep bass hums and beyond.

This isn’t mere cultural appropriation though, but more accurately a fantastic melding of musical styles by one of Critical Music’s most exciting and relevant artists. Bring together the positivity of dub with the urgency of grime and footwork, topped off with the polish and engineering expected within the D&B scene and you have an album that couldn’t feel more potent.

Refreshingly, this also feels like an album engineered for listening rather than for the selector’s convenience. Tracks weigh in at two and three minutes rather than five or six, and you’ll find few yawningly DJ friendly intros amongst the material. Rather than relying on breakdowns to change the energy, the track sequencing changes the pace instead, such as the fantastic switchup as the hyperactive grime of Run The Dance gives way to the beautiful, deep ambience of Hyroglifics collab Dark Day.

Speaking of collaborators, Wasted Days is stuffed with so many featuring credits that the whole thing should probably be credited to “Binga & Friends”. Deft, Chimpo, Om Unit and Hyroglifics all get in on the beats while vocal stylings come from Warrior Queen, Fox, Rudey Lee, Rider Shafique, Romaine, TT The Artist, Slick Don and of course the inimitable Redders. Quite a roster!

Overall this is one of the best albums we’ve heard in a year that continues to prove not only the quality but the diversity of the 170BPM sound. Absolutely essential listening! You can check out a selection of the tracks below (including some fearsome remixes from Ivy Lab available on a special edition 10″) so get yourself a flavour of Wasted Days before you hit up the Critical Store for a copy.

Versus LP [Free Love Digi]

US label Free Love Digi have been making moves recently with some top releases from both homegrown stateside talent and other producers worldwide, and their latest project sees them bringing together 17 tracks from the extended label family for a massive compilation showcasing all the styles of D&B.

Label boss Quentin Hiatus contributes a few tasty collabs, including a spacey footwork-tinged venture with Resound and the quirky rhythmic groove of The Struggle 2 with Sinistarr. Elsewhere there are chunky rollers from Fade, theStandard and Kaset, liquid from Stunna, and gritty halftime from Goreteks and Dominic Ridgeway.

There’s even space for some lush downtempo from AE on Forevergreen and Ghast on the absolutely serene New Lust. Overall it’s a fantastic selection of tracks, showcasing the breadth of FLD’s artists and the scene as a whole. You can check out all the tracks via Atic’s promo mix for the LP below; watch out for the release dropping July 20th at all good digital stores.

Ever the generous bunch, FLD have also teamed up with D&B Arena to give away a free track from Ghast to celebrate the release. Check that out below and head over to D&B Arena to check out their interview with Ghast.

Lakeway – Don’t Stop / Coke & Cola [Diffrent Music]

We’re big fans of Lakeway’s footwork-tinged 170 sound here at the Dojo so naturally news of a release for Diffrent’s Giraffestep series got us a little excited! Don’t Stop brings the heat with frantic vocal chop ups, insistent percussion and big bad bass hits, with a sprinkle of jungle FX icing the sonic cake to perfection.

Over on the flip Coke & Cola pulls a fantastic bate and switch with full roll D&B breaks giving way to slouching hip-hop bassweight, with AZ’s Sit ‘Em Back Slow sampled to great effect. Expect some serious bassface in the rave when this gets dropped!

Check out the tracks below and hit up the Diffrent Bandcamp to pre-order the release ahead of the July 13th release. Boom!

Erkiu – YRA EP [Shiro]

Apparently not content with already running three of the most esteemed labels in the scene, Samurai Music are launching their fourth imprint in July, named Shiro. Focussed exclusively on new artists who’ve never had a vinyl release, the label will produce limited white label runs with the first due on July 13th.

The music on this debut release comes from Polish producer Erkiu, who’s previously had digital releases on Cylon & CX:Digital. The EP showcases his gloomy, atmospheric sounds, blending techno influences with halftime D&B to create tracks that are minimal yet engrossing in nature.

Hollow Idol stands out as the Dojo favourite for it’s insistent groove, creepy pads and intricate percussive flourishes. Check out the clips below and hit up the Samurai Store to pre-order now.

DJ Monita – Luv Ta Luv Ya (Fracture VIP) [Astrophonica]

Astrophonica’s latest sees Fracture going in on a huge VIP of DJ Monita’s rave classic Luv Ta Luv Ya. If you enjoyed Loving Touch this should be right up your street; it’s a joyously chaotic chopped up jungle bouncer, and no mistake! Hit up the Astrophonica bandcamp to grab this on 10″ vinyl and digital right now.

Crypticz & Lakeway – Bubblegum / Guns For Hire [Sweetbox]

Brand new Bristol label Sweetbox should be one to keep an eye on this year on the strength of their debut release, showcasing two forward thinking slices of 170BPM action from Crypticz & Lakeway.

The former provides an exercise in trap-infused half-time minimalism on Bubblegum, which we assume takes its name from the distinctive “popping” FX which characterise the tune. Lakeway ups the ante on the flip with a militant slice of halftime blending hip-hop style sampling with a hefty wall of sub and a tasty percussion line. This one absolutely throbs at the low end!

Hit up the Sweetbox Bandcamp for pre-order now, and watch out for these dropping from Jun 29th at all good stores.

DNB Dojo Mix Series 16: Fearful

MixSeries16_Fearful

We’ve kept an eye on Fearful ever since his release for AutomAte Tech in 2012 and have had the pleasure of watching his style and skills develop nicely, as amply evidenced on the Mechanism EP released by Diffrent earlier this year.

Pushing a deep, dark and unique style, we felt it was high time Fearful got involved in the Dojo Mix Series, and Chris has obliged with an hour of techy, underground selections. Fresh dubs, VIPs and heavyweight business from the likes of Amoss, Skeptical, Kush T, Perverse and many more; this one is definitely one for the heads.

Fade – Acid Trip / Get Rowdy [Diffrent Music]

If the psychedelic artwork and track names haven’t already given you the hint, let us set this one straight for you; Fade is getting a bit ravey on his latest work for Dexta’s ever impressive Diffrent imprint.

Acid Trip leads with classic rave synths on the intro before pounding bass stabs slam down around the heavy hitting half-time rhythm. Get Rowdy meanwhile lulls you into a false sense of security with lush IDM-esque sounds before the frenetic percussion and chipmunk-pitched vocal refrain drop in to hype the track up. Cracking!

Check out the clips below and hit up the Diffrent bandcamp to grab this right now.

Classic Track: Riya – Seems Like

Today’s classic selection comes from Riya and dBridge in the form of Seems Like. The second release in the short but perfectly formed (and massively influential) Autonomic series combines Riya’s knack for a melancholy vocal with dBridge’s synth driven explorations in 85/170BPM envelope pushing, and still sounds as rich and fresh as it did nearly five years ago. Deeper beats…
