Spor – Caligo [Sotto Voce]

The wait is over; amid a frenzy of hype, Spor’s debut LP (and return to the scene) was leaked last week. The man himself was prepared, bringing the official release via BitTorrent forward from the original March date to drop just a few hours after the leak.

So hype and drama surrounding the release aside, is it actually any good? Speaking as a long-time fan of the producer, I have to say that it is; while some of the grit of early productions like Dreadnought and Three Faces is lost in the ultra-precise engineering, there’s still plenty to enjoy here. Much of the album is taken up with neurofunk heavy hitters; Always Right Never LeftBlueroomFull Colour and The Hole Where Your House Was will all be doing the damage on the dancefloor, and the build-ups and breakdowns still manage to get plenty of musicality into the compositions.

Elsewhere Spor explores a variety of styles; the hyper-neuro-pop of If You Cry, the epic vibes of Tasha Baxter voiced As I Need You and some lower tempo outings on Like Clockwork and Our Space. For me the album’s only real “miss” is the tedious rock crossover Empire, but fans of Hadouken might disagree here.

You can stream the whole album via Soundcloud below, and it’s available on a free/pay what you like basis via BitTorrent. We also learnt via Spor’s recent Reddit AMA that the album will be getting a vinyl release via Spor’s own Sotto Voce imprint, so watch out for that dropping sometime soon. If you’re craving more Spor check out his recent mix for Friction’s show on Radio 1, and look out for his UK tour hitting your town starting with Nottingham tonight!

Safire – Deep Architect / Shinobi [SGN:LTD]

SGN:LTD return with two hyperkinetic neurofunk cuts from Melbourne’s Safire. Deep Architect provides the more traditional dancefloor roller, with tons of energy in the breaks and bass, and great attention to detail. On the flip, Shinobi explores a different rhythm and groove, with a more consistent progression that will doubtless have the ignorant masses of Youtube asking “where’s the drop?”. Check out the clips below and look for this one exclusively at Beatport from Feb 23rd.

Need For Mirrors – Verve [Warm Communications]

The latest release on esteemed US imprint Warm Communications comes from the ever reliable Need For Mirrors. Verve sees the London-based producer deliver a stomping slab of dancefloor tech with both eyes firmly on the dancefloor; crunchy breaks evoke the spirit of the 90s techstep golden era and the bass riff here is a pure head-nodder.

Berners Street Dub dials the agro back a couple of notches, heading for deep, subby territory with more classic D&B sounds updated for the modern generation. Finally Blue Go Purple chops up more crunchy breaks for a dark, angular stepper that has the warmth and fuzz which only analogue gear can produce. If you’re looking for super-clean mixdowns this might not be for you; if you want genuine music with a vibe then this should hit the spot! Check out the clips below and look for this one on vinyl and digital from Feb 9th.

TR Tactics – Mental Delusion EP [Citrus Recordings]

Austrian D&B duo TR Tactics follow up their excellent recent work for Addictive Behaviour with a fresh new single for Citrus Recordings. Mental Delusion hits down hard with big squelchy bass riffs, while on the flip fellow Austrian producer Phentix joins the TR team for a punchy drum workout on Quest Of Mind. Check out the clips below and head to your favourite digital outlet to grab the release now!

Forbidden Society – Throne Crusher [Forbidden Society Recordings]

Forbidden Society kicks off 2015 with a big new LP filled to the brim with upfront hardstep and neurofunk stylings. Anyone looking for subtlety need not apply, but if you’re looking for a stomping selection of dancefloor D&B with a tough edge you could do far worse than this!

Highlights come on the driving, riffy Boycott, the old school reese madness of Stay True To The Game and the skittering breaks of Paradise. There’s also some weird glitch-hop madness in the form of Ion Engines and Enter, alongside a wealth of other aggy D&B business. Check out the clips below and look for this on CD, vinyl and digital from Feb 2nd.

Black Sun Empire & State Of Mind – Until The World Ends [Blackout Music]

When it comes to heavy dancefloor neurofunk, Black Sun Empire and State of the Mind have been at the top of the game for some time, and their latest collaborative EP sees them on fine form. There are no surprises on offer here, just high octane, precision engineered D&B poised to tear up a club crowd. Check out the clips below and head to Beatport to grab the EP now.

Kritix & MC Coppa – Traction [Mayan Audio]

Kritix return to Mayan Audio with a stomping new single featuring the vocal talents of MC Coppa. Drop It provides a decent slice of synth-led neuro action but really it’s all about Traction on the A side here – no holds barred D&B energy flows through this tracks veins in ample quantities! Head over to the Mayan store to pre-order this one now, and watch out for Beatport release from Jan 12th with full release following from Jan 26th.

Classic Track: Total Science & S.P.Y – Gangsta

The recent release of Shogun’s 10 Years compilation reminded me of one of my favourite tracks from their back catalogue (and one of the most worn 12″s in my collection). 2010’s Gangsta is a straightforward roller, but one that bears the hallmarks of some of the best producers in the game. Proof that less is often more, this one has serious groove and an instantly identifiable break/bassline combo. Certified dancefloor killer!

Hex – Tin Man / Skitta [Transmission Audio]

Dojo bossman Hex steps up to deliver the latest release for Leeds-based Transmission Audio. True to the label’s MO the release features two dark, techy cuts, with Tin Man bringing hard breaks and metallic bass while Skitta keeps the energy flowing with rising reese bass and plenty of atmospherics.

Culture Shock – Raindrops / Troglodyte VIP [RAM Records]

Culture Shock returns to RAM Records with a pair of dancefloor rollers to close out the year. A side Raindrops provides a solid if not wildly interesting slice of melodic D&B (albeit one which has already caused a certain amount of controversy for aleged riff stealing) but the real star of the show is the VIP of Troglodyte. The original was one of the biggest tunes of 2012 with it’s instantly memorable bassline and infectious melodic hooks, and the VIP gives it an appropriately light touch, retaining the vibe of the original but twisting it just enough to keep it interesting.

Check out the clips below and head to Beatport to grab the single now, or the RAM store to pre-order a vinyl copy.
