Q&A – June Miller

Anglo-Dutch duo June Miller have been going from strength to strength over the last few years, from strong beginnings on releases for Horizons and Inneractive, through tunes for Commercial Suicide and out into their recent signing to Andy C’s RAM Records. They’re kicking off 2014 with a bang with a brand new 12″, so we caught up with them for a quick Q&A about the release, their studio dynamic and their plans for the coming year.

DNB Dojo: The new 12″ is sounding sick! Upfront dancefloor business on the A-side and dark funk on the flip. Can you tell us a bit about how the tunes came together?

June Miller: Thank you! Empathy is all about the bassline and pads. We wanted something with a big bassline but still uplifting. We’ve been looking for vocalists but in the end we decided to just do it ourselves. 🙂 We wrote Operation Ivy a long time ago and recently gave it an update. It’s one of those tunes we enjoy making because of all the small details going on.

DD: Operation Ivy sounds like a reference to the punk band, especially with the bass sound you’ve employed. Is that part of the JM musical heritage? Any other influences you’d like to tell us about?

JM: Yes, that’s exactly what we’re referencing 🙂 We’ve played in punk bands when we were younger and we still like to listen to punk music. I think all the music we listen to is somehow incorporated into our own music. It might not be that obvious all the time but, for example, the energy and dynamics in punk rock is really important for us and we always try to make our music intense and energetic as well. It’s the same for playing live – it’s sort of a way to get all our energy out.

DD: You’ve moved from strength to strength over the last couple of years with releases on RAM, without a doubt one of the biggest labels in the game. How does it feel to be up there with legends like Andy C? Do you find it comes with any extra pressure?

JM: Well, we’re always trying to reinvent ourselves, trying to improve our own music, so being on RAM doesn’t really change the way we approach music. I think our strength is our versatility and that keeps things interesting and unpredictable. When we signed to RAM, it felt perfect for us because RAM, as well as Andy C, is a great example of the whole spectrum of drum and bass. We don’t have to pigeonhole ourselves.

DD: What’s the June Miller dynamic in the studio? Do you have set roles when writing tunes, or is it pretty fluid?

JM: We don’t really have a specific role. Usually one of us comes up with a rough idea for a tune and then we get together and make decisions about where we want to take it. We haven’t got the time to do everything together, so whenever we’re both in the studio we’ll be working on making creative choices in a tune. You don’t wanna sit in a studio together tweaking a snare for four hours. 🙂

DD: Anything in the pipeline for 2014 that you’d like to tell us about?

JM: We’ve just started working on ideas for an album which is quite fun but that’s just in the early stages. Right now we’re concentrating on making singles. We’ve finished two tunes with Nymfo and did some deeper stuff as well.

Check out the brand new Empathy/Operation Ivy 12″ below and watch out for the release dropping on vinyl and digital from January 12th.

Callide & Intraspect – Heart of the Machine [The Zoooo]

Callide & Intraspekt return to Crissy Criss’s The Zoooo imprint with another 12″ which harks back to the golden era of tech-edged dancefloor D&B around 10 years ago. Combining fierce breaks, an epic synth lead and some gritty reese bassline action, Heart Of The Machine hits the spot nicely – sufficiently “hands in the air” without veering off into utterly cheesy territory, and with enough grit to hold it’s own against out and out bangers.

Over on the flip Crowd Control tones down the euphoria and kicks down the door with hard snares and a monstrous warped bassline. As with previous collabs from Callide & Intraspekt the pair have hit the mark nicely between the grit and production quality of tech and neuro and the straight up energy of the jump-up production style Callide used to produce.

Check out the beats below and watch out for the release from December 2nd.

Conduct & Lockjaw – Futile / Big System [Lifestyle]

Lifestyle return with a big new single sure to be smashing up a few dancefloors in the near future! Conduct kick things off with some atmospherics and echoing breaks on the intro to Futile, building the tension with rising filtered synth work before amping things up with an absolutely monstrous bassline and heavy hitting compressed kicks and snares. Oooft!

Over on the flip Lockjaw deliver the appropriately titled Big System, a track clearly written with said large bass bins in mind. Throbbing modulated bass and tough, rolling breaks line up nicely to create another slice of techie business. Check out the beats below and watch out for the release dropping in all good digital stores from November 4th.

Habitat – Can They Hear Me / Holdin’ It Down [E-Motion]

E-Motion have been going from strength to strength lately and their latest release from Habitat showcases the labels versatility with a pair of modern Jungle-tinged rollers. Can They Hear Me weighs in with heavy sub weight and dark vibes while Holdin’ It Down adds a hint of jazz to the mix with a more dancefloor oriented happy smasher.

With support from the likes of Ray Keith and Aries, jungle heads should definitely keep an eye on Habitat. Check out the beats below and grab the release from your favourite digital outlet now!

NJC – Bipolar State [Ambiel]

NJC turns his pop sensibilities to the drum & bass craft with Bipolar State, a nice slice of dancefloor 170 with more musicality than most. Deft breaks nod the head to Jungle and some nice synth work gives the tune an infectious melody without resorting to overly cheesy euphoria. Last but by no means least the tune packs some tidy bass heft after the drop.

Check out the official video for the tune below and watch out for the single dropping from 4th of November with a VIP edit on the flip.

Callide & Intraspekt – Space Theory / Equinox [The Zoooo Records]

Hot on the heels of their collab for XEX Audio, Callide & Intraspekt return with another pair of absolutely stomping tunes, this time for Crissy Criss’s The Zoooo Records.

Space Theory opens the salvo with a dirty reese bassline that signals serious business. Combining the energy and impact of jump up with the grit and production values of tech and neuro, this tune is a dancefloor weapon to be reckoned with.

Equinox meanwhile does a great job of lulling me into a false sense of security with a lush intro built on piano and guitar licks. Just as you’re beginning to wonder if the duo had a few too many whiskeys in the studio and got a bit emotional the drop busts in like a hundred ton slab of granite to the jaw; clattering breaks and an absolutely pounding bassline combine to absolutely wreck the place. Distorted 808s have never done so much damage.

Watch out for these dropping August 26th via all good outlets.
