Tol-Man – Planets Part 2 [Brain Network]

Brain Network hit us with their latest digital single from Tol-Man who delivers a pair of hard hitting neurofunk belters. Saturn opens the salvo with trancey synths and plenty of atmosphere on the intro before a heavy hitting bass drop and massive synthetic snare hits knock the tune into gear.

Over on the flip the sci-fi theme continues with the rising synths and filtered breaks of the intro giving way to another another huge drop; fans of Audio and the Virus sound should definitely check this one out. Check out the clips below and pick up a copy from your favourite digital outlet.

Cern – Nostromo EP [Renegade Hardware]

Cern turns in his latest EP for the mighty Renegade Hardware, serving up a slice of dark, brooding techstep steeped in atmospherics. Opener Nostromo keeps the foot off the gas and the rhythms leftfield, with fantastic half-step (three-quarter step?) percussion and some great cymbal rings laid over ominous bass growls and eerie pads. Into Organism Cern brings things up to full pace with a rolling break and some twisted bassline business; the spirit of ’97 techstep brought out in 2013’s production quality.

Formless sees Cern teaming up with Russian producer Receptor for a hypnotic techno-influenced stomper that evokes memories of Raiden’s productions for Offkey. Finally When The Time Comes closes things out in style with a deep, subby roller. Not the usual hard as nails style from Hardware, but still bearing their mark of quality, this EP is one for the heads. Watch out for the release dropping on vinyl & digital from October 28th.

Mefjus – Contemporary EP [Critical]

Critical return with an EP of techie beasts from Mefjus, the Austrian pretender to Phace’s neuro-bass throne. The titular track sees the man pairing up with scene stalwart Icicle to create a warped, tearing smasher imbued with skittering, intricate percussion and some ridiculously exacting bassline modulations. Next up comes the riffy basswork and sharp, synthetic snare work of Dissuade, which takes it’s name from the robotic sample pleading “please don’t do that”.

Out into the digital bonus tracks Leakproof adopts a glitchier aesthetic with an angular beat pattern punctuated by stabs of melody, bass and FX to create a track that will keep the listener guessing. Finally Mob Rule builds up with synth swells to a stomping half-time beat with a singing, 8-bit tinged synth section at the very top end giving the tune character.

Check out the beats below and watch out for the full release dropping October 28th on vinyl and digital.

FIS – Homologous [Void Coms]

Kiwi producer FIS continues to push the boundaries of weird, experimental electronica on the fringes of the D&B scene with his latest release for Void Coms. The tracks display a deft appreciation for sound design and unusual rhythms, along with a complete disregard for conventional song structure.

This is not the work of an artist looking to churn out DJ friendly singles or be tied to a genre or style of someone else’s creation; rather, the record sounds like an attempt to fuse the atmospherics and deep bass of experimental D&B with the more free-form compositional style of ambient music and noise.

Deeply cinematic, so leftfield it’s off the pitch and doubtless not everyone’s cup of tea. Check out a preview of the EP below. Go on, challenge yourself.

Response – Creep & Surveillance [Ingredients]

Ingredients launch not one but two excellent 12″ singles from newcomer Response. Hailing from Manchester, the up and coming producer has developed quite a knack for techie rollers which embody the darkness and heft of early Techstep productions from the likes of Ed Rush & Optical.

The first single sees Creep opening the Response salvo with a dark roller imbued with pure subby goodness. Over on the flip Resistance chucks in hard, crusty snares and a hypnotic repeated hook matched with more of that simple yet elegant sub bass.

The second single showcases some of Response’s deeper beats, with Surveillance taking the foot off the gas a bit to deliver a deep liquid roller. Over on the flip One Nation makes good use of ambient pads and a reggae sample on the intro before bringing back that warm, dark, sub laid over a classic stepper’s beat.

Grab yourself copies of the vinyl from Redeye and look out for the digital copies dropping later in the month. And if you want to hear more from Response, check out his promo mix for Ingredients below!

Fourward – Black Tooth Grin / Guilty Pleasures [SGN:Ltd]

SGN:Ltd’s run of top quality darker beats continues with a double-A side from Austrian production quartet Fourward. Black Tooth Grin delivers the kind of warped, gnarly neurofunk we’ve come to know and love from Fourward, who have arguably some of the best bass action in the game right now.

Over on the flip Guilty Pleasures strips things back, delivering a menacing slice of splintered half-step. Think Fracture versus Noisia and you’re somewhere close.

Watch out for the release dropping October 6th. As if that wasn’t enough, the boys have compiled a tasty promo mix for the fifth installment of the SGN Mix Sessions series; packed full of tunes from Noisia, Phace, The Upbeats, and of course plenty of their own productions, this is straight up neurofunk badness. Phace – Vitreous EP [Neosignal]

Anyone concerned that Phace might be abandoning the D&B scene in the wake of his recent lower tempo collaborations with Misanthrop under their “Neosignal band” alias will be pleased by the arrival of his latest EP for their Neosignal imprint (I know, overuse of Neosignal right?). Keeping things firmly 170+ and as pounding as we expect from the German neurofunk don, the Vitreous EP is a definite statement of intent; Phace’s involvement in all things D&B is far from over.

Blind Faith opens the EP with style, warped vocals and epic synth chords giving way to some serious atmospherics before that big, gnarly bass drop that fans of Phace’s output will know and love. The drums are sparse but heavy hitting, with the twisted reese doing most of the talking. Next up comes the titular Vitreous, opening up with a hypnotic bleeping melody and some bizarre vocoder treated samples before another slamming bass drop, this time characterised by the hammering kicks of the drum line before they give way to a more rolling break with some meaty metallic snares.

Shitstorm keeps the tension high on an intro composed of insistent hats and synth stabs punctuated by positively robotic samples before dropping into a tasty slice of full roll neuro D&B characterised by a bassline that sounds much like a metal riff despite its obviously synthetic origins. Finally Electronic Frontier floats some beautiful, almost ambient synth swells over the intro before switching gear into a tribal rhythm and a constantly morphing sonic landscape, featuring everything up to and including the apparent death cry of a massive, digitally created woolly mammoth. The attention to detail and innovation on show here is truly impressive.

Check out the beats for yourself below and watch out for the release dropping via Beatport and the Neosignal Store on October 4th, vinyl from October 7th and all other digital outlets from October 18th.

Audio – Force of Nature Teaser [Virus]

Audio’s fourth full length LP (and his 3rd for Ed Rush & Optical’s well respected Virus Recordings imprint) is due to drop this November and the hype starts here! A cheeky four minute teaser video showcases mere snippets of each track from the album, but gives a nice taste of what’s to come.

Audio’s signature sound is clearly audible on the tracks, which range from heavier neurofunk belters to dark, MC-led steppers, all with that sci-fi edge Virus heads know and love. Check out the clips below and hold tight for a full review over the next few weeks.

Mutated Forms – Eighty Six EP [Pilot]

Estonian trio Mutated Forms live up to their name with a truly wonky take on the 170 sound. From the frenetic footwork/grime crossover of Tension (featuring Manchester MCs Virus Syndicate) through the mutant rave/trap/drumstep beats of Swamp and out into the hip-hop influence of Blop, these beats should challenge listeners and DJs alike.

Have a listen to the clips and watch out for the release dropping via Pilot Records from September 23rd.

Sine Language LP [Subtitles]

After something of a period of hibernation in the wake of Calyx & Teebee’s latest album for Ram Records, Teebee’s Subtitles imprint returns in style with a massive compilation album representing all the styles of D&B. While not all the tracks are outstanding (Ulterior Motive’s Gang Rule is a bit of a let down compared to most of their material), there are more than enough top class beats here to be worthy of your attention.

Among the best tracks are the warped, hefty tech of Calyx & Teebee’s Human Reptile remix, the atmospheric drumfunk of Fanu’s Rendlesham and the epic, majestic beauty of Seba’s Under The Sun (which is without a doubt the best liquid tune you’ll hear this year). There’s also plenty on show for the deep heads, with tracks from ASC, Blocks & Escher and Mark System all tripping the leftfield path.

Check out the beats below and grab yourself a copy on vinyl, CD or digital from Surus now.
