LTJ Bukem – Music (Technicolour Rework) [Good Looking]

LTJ Bukem‘s legendary Good Looking Records has been somewhat dormant for a few years now, despite continual promises from Bukem that the label will be making a resurgence. However it seems the man has finally made true on said promises, as the last couple of months have seen the first releases on the label since 2009. The latest of these is a rather tasty rework of Bukem’s classic Music by deep liquid maestro Technicolour (of Technimatic). The rework aptly captures the spirit of the original but brings the tempo up a little in line with more modern D&B releases. Smooth vibes all the way.

Over on the flip the original has been repressed, and for anyone who might have missed the 90s heyday, here it is in all it’s 10 minute long glory! Go grab yourself a copy of the release on white label from the Good Looking Store.

Stray – When It Rains / Thumbprint [Blu Mar Ten Music]

Blu Mar Ten opened the doors of their label to outside talent at the end of last year to widespread acclaim, and their latest release from Stray shows a continuing commitment to releasing the best in leftfield drum & bass.

A side When It Rains is elegant, ambient, so minimal it can barely even be called drum & bass, and perfect for it. All echoes and reverb, a sculpted soundscape in every sense of the word.

Thumbprint on the flip delivers a totally different vibe, with utterly glitched vocals layered over an off kilter beat and some dark bassy stabs to create a robotic, angular sound that’s reminiscent of some of Rockwell’s tunes, if rather less angry.

Watch out for the release on Jan 28th.

Bungle – Astral Travel / Aura [Soul:R]

Marcus Intalex‘s much esteemed Soul:R imprint had an excellent 2012 and it seems that 2013 is gonna be no different. To open up the release schedule they’ve got a stunning release from Brazilian producer Bungle, and one which Intalex himself has described as ‘the best Soul:R 12″ there has been for a long time’. For once the fine words of Flava Flav are wrong – believe the hype!

Astral Travel on the A side is a beautiful understated roller than brings to mind Calibre’s best work, with simple, warm synth lines and a crisp, clean break combining to almost ethereal effect. Aura on the flip keeps things deep but changes pace slightly with an ever so slightly angular beat pattern, but again combined with superb uplifting synth leads and piano to create something simple and elegant.

Check out the tunes below and watch out for the release on Jan 21st!

Junction 12 EP [IM:Ltd]

French label IM:Ltd have been going from strength to strength recently and their latest EP Junction 12 is no exception. Due at the end of the month, it showcases the sort of depth and versatility we’ve come to expect from the label, from dark steppers like Kantyze’s Tough Breaker and Quartz’ Armour King to slightly more leftfield vibes like Es.tereo’s autonomic-esque title track.

Check out the tracks below and watch out for this one dropping January 28th!

Lynx – Balloons / Passing Time [Soul:R]

Not content with mighty releases from Phil Tangent and DRS, Soul:R are back with more, this time from eclectic producer Lynx who delivers a great little 12″. Balloons is a half stepper with tons of character, cheeky bleeps and bloops ambling through the tune, but for me it’s all about the deep roller on the flip Passing Time.

Watch out for this one dropping on Soul:R on Decmber 17th!

Seba Album Sampler [Secops]

Swedish Drum & Bass maestro Seba is winding up to release his latest album on his own Secret Operations label, and in preparation he’s got a 12″ sampler in the works. Too Much Too Soon delivers a nice slice of warm vocal driven liquid but for me it’s all about the crisp snares and acid style bass of Say You Love Me. Watch out for the release on December 17th!

Phil Tangent – Restitution [Soul:R]

Soul:R have had a brilliant year and are aiming to round it off in style with their last few singles, one of which comes from the very talented Phil Tangent. Phil delivers deep vibes throughout, from the ethereal synths and rolling breakbeats of Restitution on the A side to the slightly grittier vibes of Squaring The Circle on the flip, featuring a cheeky vocal sample of none other than Bjork!

Look out for this one dropping December 10th on Soul:R.

Gerwin – Lying Portraits / Soul Truths [IM:Ltd]

IM:LTD‘s latest release sees Gerwin coming in with two genuinely interesting slices of D&B that occupy a strange halfway house between styles, merging the growling basslines of techstep with the soulful melodies of deep liquid. It shouldn’t work, but it does! Opener Lying Portraits sees Gerwin team up with Nuage and MC 2Shy, who excels himself with a deep, well written rap vocal (which makes a change from the hordes of average gritty rhymes in D&B right now). Over on the flip Gerwin utilises a nice R&B sample to build the track before the growling bassline takes over.

Look out for this one at all good digital outlets from December 10th!

Zero T – Red Hand [CIA Deepkut]

The latest release on CIA’s Deepkut sublabel sees Zero T coming in with a tidy stepper in the form of Red Hand. A seriously infectious bassline and super tight drum rolls to fill out the beat make for a sure fire dancefloor hit. Check it out below and grab yourself a copy from your favourite vinyl/digital outlet!

Enei – Machines [Critical]

It seems like Critical Music can do no wrong right now. This year has seen the label release a slew of quality tunes from top flight producers (including the positively anthemic Oblique) not to mension label boss Kasra‘s induction to the Fabriclive mix family. Not content with that, Critical are now stepping up to the plate once again with the debut album from Russian producer Enei, and it’s pretty stunning. 2012 has already been quite a year for drum & bass albums with great releases from Octane & DLR, BCee, Symmetry Recordings and DRS to name but a few, and Enei’s debut sits alongside and perhaps even a little above the efforts of his peers.

From the soulful liquid of Runnin to the face smashing basslines of Centrifuge, through the dark jungle cutups of Saligia and off into the rolling grime of Cracker VIP the record oozes production quality left right and centre, and should feature something for everyone. There’s even a cheeky old skool throwback in the form of Rotate and a tidy deep house number in the digital exclusives.

Better still the label have teamed up with the Surus store to offer a bundle of CD, 2×12″ vinyl, 1×10″ vinyl, posters, bag and digital download for the frankly ridiculous price of £20. Vinyl heads should be rushing over here for that one. Check out the previews and watch for the album dropping on November 12th.
