Quentin Hiatus – I’m Neither Quentin Nor Hiatus [Free Love Digi]

Quentin Hiatus’ work has been skirting the boundaries of Drum & Bass for some time now, blending hip-hop, halftime D&B, footwork and who knows what else to craft a style which is almost impossible to pin down or pigeon hole. His latest mini LP, I’m Neither Quentin Nor Hiatus Vol. 1, drops on his own Free Love Digi imprint next month, and it features some of his most exciting aural experiments to date.

Let’s be clear straight away; this album isn’t drum & bass by any conventional definition. The influence of 20 years of jungle and its offshoots undeniably informs Quentin’s music, but this latest release features few if any of the genre’s standard tropes beyond a shared tempo region. Purists expecting 2-step rhythms or amen breaks may well be disappointed, but open-minded listeners should find themselves drawn into a rich tapestry of sounds and feelings unconstrained by the more formulaic standards of electronic music.

The LP features a wide range of vibes across its seven tracks, ranging from the funky halftime hip-hop of Wait Right Here to the threatening techno infused sounds of 56 and out into the semi-ambient synth ramblings of Kuchi Kopi. While some of the tracks feel like they could move a few dancing feet, for the most part this feels like a man trying (and indeed succeeding) in converting his inner thoughts to music without much concern for how the end product will fit into anyone else’s expectations.

Abstract, beautiful and challenging, this is an LP that may well be overlooked in the sea of more easily consumable DJ friendly-fare, which would be a great shame. Expand your horizons via the clips below, and look out for the LP dropping from November 11th via all good digital stores.

Modu – Empathogenic EP [Alchemic Breaks]

Leftfield UK D&B imprint Alchemic Breaks return with their sixth release from Bristol beatsmith Modu. The Empathogenic EP features two nice chunky tech rollers with some quality atmospherics, but the real highlight comes on closing track Resonate.

Bringing together growling bass warmth, glitchy vocal cuts and a crooked little halftime riddim, this experimental yet eminently dancefloor-worthy track easily steals the show for us here at the Dojo. Check out the clips below and look for the EP dropping next week via all the usual digital outlets.

DNB Dojo Mix Series 20: Thing

MixSeries20_Thing

Thing is a busy man. Between dropping tracks for the likes of Doc Scott’s 31 Records and Blu Mar Ten Music the Estonian producer releases a phenomenal quantity of music via his own Dubthing and Depthwise labels.

Thing has been kind enough to take time out of the studio to record our latest exclusive mix, and it’s quite a sonic journey. Starting out with experimental cuts from the likes of Moresounds, Survey and Sam KDC, taking in his brand new inSpace/Crickets single and finishing up with classic techstep from Lemon D and Dillinja, this is a perfectly crafted mix from a serious selector.

As usual you can check out the mix via Soundcloud below or head to Mixcloud, Hearthis.at or iTunes to stream. You can also grab a download from Dropbox. Don’t forget to check out Thing’s new single and his recent Collected Works compilation too!

Germanovski – Promise / Confession [Plush]

Denver label Plush Recordings come with a nice little slice of halftime jungle from Germanovski, and it’s not hard to see why these cuts have been getting support from the mighty Om Unit!

A suave combo of intricate slow/fast percussion and chopped up R&B vocals define Promise, giving it a hint of garage as well as the obvious junglist sensibilities. Confession meanwhile carries a far more tribal, hypnotic vibe, losing the carefree melodies for a more introspective ambience. Promising stuff from a producer we’re gonna keep an eye on! Check out the clips below and hit up your favourite store to grab a copy now.

Cirrus – Way Out / Strange Things [AutomAte Deep]

When an artist we love and a label we love join forces, chances are we’ll enjoy the results, and that couldn’t be more true of US producer Cirrus’s latest work for one of our favourite imprints, Bristol-based AutomAte.

Unsurprisingly for those familiar with AutomAte’s triple-headed label family, Cirrus brings his creations to the leftfield “Deep” arm, continuing the legacy carved out by Fuj, Deficit, Tonic and the rest of the label’s experimental production roster. Drawing on cinematic sampling and rich, ominous soundscapes, both tunes play with the halftime drum & bass template to great effect, conjuring up weird and wonderful imagery over a backdrop of steady, driving beats and bass.

It’s all about the detail on these tracks, with different elements perfectly mixed, faded and reverbed to form a sonic tapestry full of intricacy and intrigue. Deeper beats powered by deeper thoughts. Check out the clips below and hit up Beatport to grab the single now!

QBig & Zenith B – Enkidu EP [Demand Records]

QBig & Zenith B’s latest EP for Demand Records sees them exploring unusual halftime/slow-fast riddims with a selection of top notch tracks that showcase some fantastic percussive chops.

The tracks on show veer between more spacious, dubbier vibes on Enkidu & Mombasa Dub and the more frenetic, Stray-esque sounds of Narc and This Is What You Get. The footwork-tinged insistence and generally chaotic vibe of these latter two make them the Dojo favourites, but the whole EP is really strong. Check out the clips below and hit up Beatport to grab a copy now!

Koronis – The Replicant LP

Koronis

Kiwi producer and sound-design artist Koronis isn’t a name I’ve come across before, but it’s certainly one I’ll be keeping an eye on in future based on the strength of his latest LP project The Replicant. Bringing together creepy atmospherics more common to dark ambient and crisp techstep minimalism, the resulting tracks have a bleakness and intrigue which draws the listener in impressively.

The LP’s first half focuses on more conventional drum & bass patterns, and while not unduly dancefloor focussed features three tracks which wouldn’t feel out of place in a “room 2” set from the likes of Amoss or Cern. Tough amens, intricate drum patterns and a gloomy vibe pervades the material here nicely.

The second half takes things far more abstract, dropping the beats almost entirely to focus on sound design and texture, with powerful ambience and use of atonal melodies taking the tone to a deeper and almost spiritual place. Koronis is tapping into the cross section between dark D&B and dark ambient for a truly unique experience here, not least on the haunting tones of Kara, the LP’s final track.

For those who enjoy exploring the less than beaten paths at the fringes of drum & bass, I can’t recommend this record enough. Check out the video mix below for a flavour of the material and watch out for the LP dropping later this year on vinyl and digital.

Quentin Hiatus – Time Continuum / Gully [Onset Audio]

The ever prolific Quentin Hiatus is back and this time he’s dropping experimental riddims for Onset Audio. Time Continuum harnesses the spirit of Techno for a quirky, robotic workout with some interesting switchups, apparently exploring the vastness of time & space via it’s various peaks and troughs.

Gully meanwhile drops the tempo slightly to the 160BPM region and blends the techno influence found on the first track with crusty old school breaks and more unusual rhythmic manoeuvres. These beats will have you constantly guessing! Check out the clips below and hit up your favourite digital outlet to grab them right now.

Jazzatron – Urto EP [Alchemic Breaks]

Alchemic Breaks present their 5th release from Italian producers Jazzatron, who dish up a tasty little EP of varied delights. Urto keeps things relatively conventional, dishing up a solid slice of techstep with some nice percussive details, but this is just an entrée for the main course coming up.

Come Quick should prove a win for fans of the jungle tinged sound, harnessing classic breaks and ethereal pads for a bit of a retro-modern vibe, bringing tons of character to the tune. Our favourite here at the Dojo though is the chopped up percussion assault of Juke/Footwork influenced Just Jukking. Fantastic rhythm and low end scuzz…yes please.

Check out the clips below and look for this one dropping August 22nd.

Bad Graphics – Progression / Altitude [Ronin Audio]

Leeds label Ronin Audio bring us their first release, with two experimental cuts from local production duo Bad Graphics. Progression keeps things pretty stark and ominous, switching at will between bassy minimalism and hyperactive break smashing, creating a really nice duality. Over on the flip Altitude keeps the beats a bit steadier, playing around with a fantastically wonky bassline that refuses to pin itself down into an obvious groove, preferring to keep the listener off balance with it’s odd rhythms.

You can grab this one right now from the Ronin Bandcamp, and if you want to find out a bit more about the label be sure to check out our Q&A with label boss Chimera.
