Andy Sim – Liquidambar [Think Deep]

Liquid heads should already be familiar with Sydney’s Andy Sim; with releases for the likes of Good Looking, Fokuz, Rubik and of course his own Think Deep imprint he’s been a strong name (in an admittedly crowded niche) for the last eight years.

2015 sees him finally releasing the LP that he’s been working on for the last five years, and while it’s not stylistically groundbreaking it is an honest and heartfelt collection of tracks which are well worthy of your attention. The body of work bears the hallmarks of a labour of love – these tracks weren’t knocked up in a month and thrown together hastily, but rather have been tweaked and tinkered to perfection, if such a thing is musically possible.

Highlights come on the sparse, dubby Innerspace, the soft, jazzy licks of the LaMeduza-vocalled In Front Of You and the shimmering notes of Fantastic, but picking favourites is difficult. Listen to the clips below and make up your own mind; this one drops at all good digital retailers from June 22nd, and you can grab it on CD directly from Think Deep.

Kairos – Ho2k / Walks of Life [Bay 6 Recordings]

Essex label Bay 6 are a new name to us here at the Dojo but definitely one we’ll be keeping an eye on in future. Their latest comes from Colchester’s Kairos who brings two deep, understated slices of liquid D&B to the table.

Ho2k layers up piano, soft pads and warm sub against a simple but effective 2step kick/click drum beat for a composition that feels effortless absolutely effortless. Walks of Life switches up the drums for a more shuffling rhythm set to a shimmering array of synths, once again keeping it understated but evocative.

Check out the clips below and head to Juno to grab these right now!

Stickbubbly – String Theory [Such Music]

Stickbubbly-String-Theory

LA liquid imprint Such Music bring us their tenth release from the rather oddly named Stickbubbly, who returns to the label with more of his crisp, melodic rollers. String Theory bubbles away with style and aplomb, floaty melodies giving the tune it’s character over a solid bedrock of beats and bass.

Over on the flip Take Flight brings the energy down a few notches to explore the half-time tempo, and I’ve gotta say I hope to hear more liquid operating in this beat pattern. Lush! Check out the clips below and grab this one from your favourite store right now!

Bensley – Next Generation [RAM Records]

It’s rare for next artists to live up to the hype these days, and the hype surrounding Bensley has been considerable. After signing exclusively to RAM in a shower of media buzz (despite having released precisely zero tracks at that point), all went very quiet on the Bensley front for some time, until February when Fandango gave us our first taste of the man’s talents.

The wait is now over and Bensley’s debut LP Next Generation has been with us for a couple of weeks, and this reviewer believes it is worthy of the hype. The whole sound the young Canadian has carved on the record manages to avoid the traditional D&B sub-genre pigeon-holes aptly; it has the RAM Records polish, but he’s not trying to be the next DC Breaks, and it has a strong sense of melody without sounding like the plethora of genre liquid to be found on Hospital or Fokuz.

What then, makes the album special? The clear influence of IDM and Ambient, for a start; everything about the chord progressions, pad work and song structure shows a man who loves D&B but also listens to plenty of more diverse electronic music. The soaring synth lead of Fool’s Gold (paired with equally soaring guitar) and the early µ-Ziq-esque chimings of Rain Dance are but two examples on an album that has plenty more.

Better still, this is an LP which ignores any temptation for radio-friendly singles or dancefloor-friendly “wait for the drop” tracks. There isn’t a vocalist in sight, and many of the beat patterns share more in common with downtempo than D&B. Even on the more upbeat tracks like Manta or Aftermath there’s the strong sense that this has been designed as much for your armchair as the club, though we’re willing to bet both of those tracks would move a crowd.

It’s rare to hear true innovation in any style of music these days, and while the elements of Bensley’s style can easily be traced back to their original sources he has configured them into a most pleasing sonic jigsaw that isn’t quite like anything else on the scene right now, and for that he should be applauded. Fast Soul Music [Hospital Records]

fastsoul

Whether you’re a new convert to the realms of Drum & Bass or an old hand with a massive record collection, some of the label back catalogues can be a touch on the intimidating side, and none more so than Hospital Records. The label is on course to hit 300 releases in the near future, and the rich 18 year history leaves quite an archive for anyone to dig through.

How convenient then that Tony Colman & his compadres have cherry picked the best for a new compilation! Fast Soul Music provides a whopping 46 tracks, picking out the best of the label’s output old and new and bundling it together for a bargain price, including two 60 minute mixes from Hospital stalwart Nu:Tone.

Needless to say it would be pretty difficult to cover every track in the selection, but there are some absolute classics on show here; the likes of Netsky’s Memory Lane, High Contrast’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Tokyo Prose’s Songbird and London Elektricity’s Had A Little Fight stand out from a packed tracklist featuring top notch melodic cuts from the whole Hospital family.

Whether you’re new to the liquid sound or just want a tidy mix for the car, it’s difficult to argue with the wealth of quality tunes here. Head over to the Hospital Store to pre-order the compilation now ahead of it’s release on Monday. Meantime you can get a flavour of things from Makoto’s promotional mix below.

Soul:Motion – Sentiment / Lonely Road [Rush Records]

Music with feeling is often a bit absent from the world of D&B (and indeed the wider world of club-oriented electronica) so fresh releases from the likes of Soul:Motion provide a bit of a breath of fresh air; for all that we like a gnarly drop here at the Dojo it’s not all that this music has to offer.

Their latest single for Rush Records certainly has plenty of emotion to it, with a spalsh of dancefloor sensibilities for good measure. Sentiment proves plenty soulful with soothing pads and soft vocal snippets, but Lonely Road is the true star of the show. Simple piano chords and soft strings combine with a crisp liquid break for a track that just shimmers effortlessly. One to lose yourself in. Check out the clips below and grab this one right now!

Chorux – Polaris EP [Warm Communications]

We’ve long been fans of Warm Communications here at the Dojo; the label’s knack for releasing tracks which have dancefloor appeal without sacrificing musicality and soul is up there with the best of them, and their latest release from newcomer Chorux fits that mould perfectly.

Don’t Even Know brings together a soulful vocal and classic liquid piano chords with a tough break and growling bassline for some of that tech-with-soul/liquid-with-teeth that we love so much. Polaris keeps the beats chunky and the bass growling but swaps the melancholy piano for a manic, sweeping, bleeping lead. Hints of dub and a playful tone make this one stand out.

That playful theme continues on It’s All Happenning; this one’s a deep, wobbly roller that should move a floor without any bother. Away From The Light closes things out with plenty of cheeky back and forth between the shimmering lead and the wompy bassline, each element coming to the fore before rapidly running for the shadows once again.

We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Chorux in the future; check out the clips below and grab this one from your favourite digital store now!

Javano – Truth / Reverse Gliding [Sub:mission Audio]

Sub:mission Audio are back with a pair of fresh new liquid rollers from young London-based producer Javano. Both tracks show a melodic finesse and soft touch well refined for a producer of so few years, with the piano-led Truth being our pick of the pair. There’s also a big wobbly jungle-tinged roller in the form of Brighter Days which you can grab from Soundcloud; can’t say fairer than that! Check out the clips below and look for this dropping at all the usual digital outlets from April 1st.

Paul SG – Goggles & Gauges EP [Ambra Recordings]

Paul SG brings two fresh new liquid rollers to the table on the latest release for Ambra Recordings. The oddly titled Goggles and Gauges provides a playful but mellow composition, bringing together bouncy sub, jazzy licks and a tasty little drum line to great effect.

Caragua goes for a more “classic” style of liquid breakbeat, but plays around with bass guitar, flute and other unusual samples to keep the tune fresh. Check out the clips below and grab this one from your favourite digital store now!

Soul:Motion/Modu – Remixes [Inform Records]

The latest release for Inform Records sees Tokalosh and Soul:Motion on remix duties, reworking two tracks from the previous Summer Selection EP Vol. 2It’s tough to pick between the two tracks, both proving worthy deep liquid rollers, but Soul:Motion’s remix of Why We Make Mistakes narrowly edges it out as the Dojo favourite; effortless vibes.
