Tokyo Prose – Presence [Samurai Red Seal]

Living up to the promise of early releases is no mean feat for any artist in any scene. For D&B, it’s not so much the “difficult second album” of rock and pop as the “difficult first album following several great EPs or singles”. The album format may have become more popular in recent years, especially for purveyors of the deeper side of the music, but that makes it no less difficult to do well, and many have released competent LPs which nonetheless either feel too filler-heavy or merely like a collection of singles rather than a coherent body of work.

Thankfully, Tokyo Prose’s debut suffers neither of these criticisms. The quality and depth of the production is breathtaking, and the tracks flow effortlessly together through commonality of tone and spirit. Make no mistake though, there’s more than enough detail and variation to hold your interest across the LPs 13 tracks.

Picking favourites is a difficult exercise as with all top quality LPs, especially with the likes of Lenzman, Synkro and LSB popping in for collaborations. The soft strings of Covet, the effortless downtempo of 16 Bar Cycles and the uplifting piano and reverb drenched vocals of Small Gains all stand out, but this is an album where different tunes are likely to speak to different listeners. One thing is for sure; from the opening  chimes to the beautiful, beatless outro of Dance With You, every new track is a treat and a pleasure. Check out the clips below and grab yourself a copy on vinyl or CD from the Samurai Store.

Blu Mar Ten – Famous Lost Words Remixes: Part 1 [Blu Mar Ten Music]

The first of the Famous Lost Words remix releases touches down with fresh reworks from Break and Frederic Robinson. Break’s name often comes up in discussions of “the best drums in D&B”, and his take on Break It All Apart is a great example of his gift for crisp, punchy breaks. Keeping the soulful vocal and melodies of the original but bolstering them with insistent drums and some tasty filtered bass growls, this is a lovely balance of dancefloor sensibilities and musical beauty.

Frederic Robinson meanwhile applies his unique stylings to Somewhere, dropping the energy for a Bonobo-esque downtempo rework. Shuffling beats, synth swells and Frederic’s gift for soft melody combine as he makes the work his own, and the results are pretty breathtaking. The child-like innocence often heard in his music shines through here, and the vibe is irresistible. More Frederic Robinson releases please Blu Mar Ten!

The remixes will be available on vinyl and digital from Blu Mar Ten’s store and all the usual outlets. Check out the clips below and grab your copy from August 4th.

Technimatic – Desire Paths [Shogun Audio]

As we approach the July 27th release date gradually the good folk at Shogun Audio are revealing more and more of the new Technimatic album, and it’s shaping up to be well worth a look for fans of the melodic end of the genre. From the super mellow Music is Music and the interesting rhythms of Perseverance to the more dancefloor friendly stylings of Beneath The Skies and Tectonic, it’s difficult to argue with the quality of the tracks on show so far.

My pick of the bunch has to be the insistent yet understated piano and crisp breaks of Looking For Diversion, featuring the delicate vocal talents of Lucy Kitchen, but there are plenty of other highlights too including the drumfunk workout of Lost Times and the downtempo funk of Mucky Jeff. Check out the clips below and watch out for the album dropping very soon on vinyl and digital.

Actraiser – Inner Beauty EP [Celsius Recordings]

Actraiser continues his catalogue of beautiful liquid beats with a four track EP for Fokuz sister imprint Celsius. The titular Inner Beauty kicks things off with crisp, rolling breaks, lush atmospheres and piano trills echoing in and out of the mix. There’s even time for a hint of jazz with the odd burst of sax for flavour. Get It On drops the urgency a couple of notches and heads for the groove; the title says it all on this one I think!

The Road To Enlightenment ups the energy once more, with melodic elements floating over a hefty backbone of sub bass and breaks. Last but by no means least, Cosmic Shift blends epic trance-style synths with cheeky arpeggios for a euphoric yet meditative atmosphere. Watch out for the EP dropping on vinyl and digital from July 14th.

Dr Meaker – Right Back (Break Remix) [V Recordings]

The ever prolific Break steps up for remix duties on Dr Meaker’s new single Right Back, combining his nack for hefty drums and bass with the soft, soulful vocals and summery melodies of the original. One for the festival season! Check out the tune below and watch out for it dropping via V Recordings on July 28th.

Mav – Sounds of the Deep [Scientific Records]

Mav drops his debut album for Scientific Records, featuring a selection of melody driven D&B tunes and some big remixes to boot. Asides from terrific compositions with tons of character, the album also features a couple of DJ friendly genre-hopping tracks, with Makati Oasis dropping down to a cheeky house-tempo bridge and Trigger the Rabbit flirting with bouncy breaks for an interlude from it’s D&B verses.

Elsewhere there’s a fantastic future-funk amen workout on Break Is The Legend and soaring arpeggios aplenty on The Dolphin and the Bassline. Remix-wise, highlights include Chris.SU’s rolling dancefloor remix of Me Against The Machine, Seba’s deep atmospheric relick of Between Heaven and the Deep Blue Sea and Bungle’s super chilled remix of Skylines. Check out the tracks below and grab this one on vinyl or digital now!

Actraiser – Long Way From Home EP [Fokuz Recordings]

Cambridge producer Actraiser returns to Dutch imprint Fokuz Recordings with four tracks of warm, melodic and bassy liquid D&B. All four tracks are excellent in their own way but the pick of the bunch for me is the rapid melodic chimes, infectious groove and huge sub bass of Without You. Check out the clips below and watch out for this dropping at all good digital stores from May 19th.

Duoscience – Choices / Report Notes [Such Music]

Duoscience returns to the fray with a pair of his trademark liquid rollers for Such Music. Choices gets a good groove on with an insistent break, warm sub and an understated yet infectious hook.

Report Notes heads for more melodic territory with some classic organ warbling on the intro giving way to a playful bassline and warm, soulful chord hits. Happy roller ahoy!

Watch out for this one dropping at all good digital outlets from May 5th.

Escapism LP [Liquicity Records]

Those of you with their fingers on the pulse of the liquid scene might have already heard this one when it dropped back in February but it only landed in our inbox recently. Still, the tunes on show proved too good not to talk about! Liquicity Records proudly present to us their Escapism LP featuring 14 tracks of smooth, melodic drum & bass from producers big and small across the liquid spectrum.

The tracks are all top quality so it’s pretty tough to pick out favourites but the effortless opener from Bachelors of Science certainly proves a highlight of the LP. Elsewhere the soft, twinkling lead of Maduk’s Change and the unconventional electric guitar work of Dan Dakota’s appropriately titled Telecaster both stand out, while BCee’s The Falls takes us to deeper territory with style.

Check out all the tracks below and pick up the album on vinyl, CD or digital now!

Duoscience – Dawn / Declarations of Love [E-Motion Records]

E-Motion start their year with a pair of musical, funky liquid rollers from Duoscience. Dawn employs the classic liquid tropes of warm sub bass, catchy hooks and an emphasis on melody, making great use of harmonics to provide a really rich tone to the lead lines.

Declarations of Love heads for similar territory, with strings and guitar taking the foreground over a background of crisp, rolling breaks. Check out the clips below and watch out for the release dropping from Jan 20th at all good digital outlets.
