Today’s premiere comes from Methlab’s deepest release yet for their BNKR imprint. Taken from Acid Lab’s Evora EP, Origami features the man under his ‘Kodama’ alias delivering a stark, minimal slice of “grey area” dub-techno influenced 170BPM business. Lush synth work and stripped back percussion define a track that has the atmosphere cranked up all the way to 11. One to lose yourself in…look out for the EP dropping Jan 23rd on Bandcamp with all other stores following on the 25th.
Our first premiere of 2018 comes from the Tesseract Recordings crew and Belgian producers Subreachers & Bassdubbers. Again Son features a heavy hitting bassline with hints of the early dubstep sound with skittering jungle snares layered over a halftime backbeat. Snatches of ragga vocals echo through the mix to finish off the stark, dubbed out vibe of this track; wicked tune. The EP drops Sunday at Bandcamp with other platforms following from 2nd Feb.
Sneaking in just in time for Christmas, Hex is back on the decks for the last Dojocast of 2017! As usual the mix is packed full of new beats across all the styles of D&B, with neuro bangers, halftime weight, liquid rollers, jungle and experimental tracks alike. Today’s exclusive lies at the very edge of what might traditionally be considered drum & bass, blending influences from footwork, IDM and the Autonomic sound for a deep, mellow, hypnotic outing. A winning hand indeed…out to Øska for a seriously unique track!
Breakage is a man with some history in the D&B scene. From early singles on Reinforced and Bassbin, through the anthemic Staggered Dub on Critical and out into his later work for Digital Soundboy, James was a constantly inventive force in the scene for a decade, and his presence was missed when he began to eschew drum & bass in favour of explorations into other genres.
Thankfully in recent times he’s been back up at 170, although seemingly in no hurry with his output; Ric Flair Strut is only the second release on his newly minted Index imprint, following on from the February drop of Elmhurst Dub. The quality over quantity approach really shines through as a result, and both tracks on the new single are essential listening.
We’re not quite sure of the link to Ric Flair’s wrestling signature but the A-side certainly has a swagger; a deceptively simple combination of breaks, pads and bass, this one has a satisfying low-end wobble and more than enough punch to rock a floor. Flip-side Sanctuary meanwhile provides an ode to old school jungle, from the classic bleeps and echoed vocals to the basic sub hits and crispy breaks. Both sides are exactingly crafted, providing the antithesis to the hyperactive production found elsewhere in the scene.
