Genotype – Lessons In Depth EP [Samurai Music]

The legendary Genotype brings his signature brand of deep, futuristic jungle to Samurai Music with an EP that oozes character and atmosphere. From the natural, tribal percussion and dubby hip-hop vibe of Jam That Feel through the oddly cheery classical flourishes of the intro to Financial War and out into the bleak minimalism of Creative Elements, the EP largely defies genre conventions and eschews traditional structures in favour of delivering beats aimed at your head and your heart.

Even when we’re in more familiar D&B territory on The Day After The Night the quality and sound design is absolutely breathtaking, and the track retains a left-field vibe, harking back to old Hardware B-sides. Definitely one for the deep heads, but also possibly the best thing Genotype has ever made…look out for this one on vinyl and digital from June 24th.

Genotype – The Good Turned Ugly EP [Nurtured Beatz]

If you like it deep and dark then Genotypes‘s beats have always been the place to look, and his latest EP for new label Nurtured Beatz keeps it on that tip. Crisp, clean drum lines, atmospheric snares and dark, haunting sub is the order of the day here. Reigning it back from out and out neurofunk but still keeping the tempo high and the beats at full roll, Genotype delivers a solid EP of minimal steppers.

Check out the beats below and watch out for the release dropping March 25th.

Sam KDC – £5 Bundle

Sam KDC has been busy for the last couple of years, crafting material for the likes of ASC’s Auxilliary imprint and dishing up some excellent remixes. His latest offering is a veritable bargain available from his Official.fm page and consisting of ten great tracks for five of your British pounds. The content ranges from deep, smooth liquid on tracks like Back Where I Met You, through deep, mellow half-steppers like Washed Out and Departed and even a bit of dark amen business on Burn It Down.

Excellent tunes, excellent value! Check out a mix of the tunes below and then go grab yourself a copy!

In The Mix…Lenzman & Dan Steno

primer_-_lenzman-feat-riya-reprise-podcast-may-2010-28029

Those who keep an eye on Lenzman‘s soundcloud will have noticed that he releases an excellent mix every month or two, usually with the accompaniment of a talented yet understated MC. Past mixtapes have featured DRS and Riya, and this time Dan Steno steps up to the mic and helps Lenzman bring in the new year with a selection of drum & bass spanning deep minimal and warm, soulful liquid. Highlights include new cuts from Critical, Soul:R, and the beautiful new Makoto remix of Lenzman’s Broken Dreams which is forthcoming on Metalheadz later this year. Yes selecta!

Stray – When It Rains / Thumbprint [Blu Mar Ten Music]

Blu Mar Ten opened the doors of their label to outside talent at the end of last year to widespread acclaim, and their latest release from Stray shows a continuing commitment to releasing the best in leftfield drum & bass.

A side When It Rains is elegant, ambient, so minimal it can barely even be called drum & bass, and perfect for it. All echoes and reverb, a sculpted soundscape in every sense of the word.

Thumbprint on the flip delivers a totally different vibe, with utterly glitched vocals layered over an off kilter beat and some dark bassy stabs to create a robotic, angular sound that’s reminiscent of some of Rockwell’s tunes, if rather less angry.

Watch out for the release on Jan 28th.

Fathom Audio – Promises [Diffrent]

Fathom Audio have brought some seriously sinister vibes on their latest release for Diffrent Music. Minimal drum beats and a twinkling high end melody combine with some seriously dirty bass stabs that are reminiscent of early Photek tunes like Sidewinder to make Promises a really interesting slice of D&B.

Over on the flip Ridges actually delivers a more upbeat, cinematic number, with rising arpeggiated melodies and swelling synth bursts used to great effect over glitchy drum lines to deliver a soulful tune. Definitely more armchair than dancefloor, and all the better for it!

Watch out for the full release on September 3rd.

Mode – Around The Edges [The Crescent]

The debut release on The Crescent comes from Mode, who’s recent output for labels like Ingredients and Exit Records has put him up alongside ASC and dBridge at the forefront of the minimal DnB scene.

A-side Around the Edges draws on a muted, techno inspired  kick line with soft pads to create a moody slice of half step goodness, while Sam KDC‘s remix of The Abyss on the flip is dark dub at it’s purest and most stripped down. Watch out for the release on April 30th.
