Lurch – Long Road Back [Flexout]

Flexout Audio continue their impressive run of releases with two fresh tracks from Lurch. Long Road Back brings together Lurch’s aptitude for melancholy liquid elements with a growling bassline and a heavy hitting halftime drum line, creating a great little hybrid of light and dark. Beer Belly Dub ups the ante, going in full roll on the drums and bringing in tons of movement in the low end for a perfect balance of grime and funk. This one’s out now at all good digital outlets; get to know!

Soul Intent – Late Night Sleaze EP [Lossless]

Soul Intent has been really impressing us here at the Dojo lately and his latest work on his own Lossless Music imprint proves no exception to that rule. The Late Night Sleaze EP collects four cheeky rollers imbued with plenty of character and soul, walking a pleasant line between dancefloor chops and musical deftness.

1,2,3,4 kicks off the release, featuring old school hero DJ Tango and a combination of twangy double bass and rolling breakbeats which should put a skip in your step and a smile on your face; low slung and funky as hell. Go Hustle takes things murkier, skuzzing out the bass behind some tasty jazz licks for a solid head-nodder.

Late Night Sleaze continues that jazz theme, with sultry saxophone riffs accompanying another satisfyingly chunky break for a tune that positively oozes class. Eyes might even meet on the dancefloor over this one! Last but not least, Nearly There spaces things way out for an epic downtempo jam, reverb drenched snares echoing out into the distance behind the mournful piano riff for a proper tug at the heartstrings.

It’s always great to hear artists proving that drum & bass can be about emotion as well as just making your feet move, and this EP more than accomplishes that feat. Check out the clips below and hit up the Lossless Bandcamp to get a copy direct from the source on vinyl or digital now.

October Roundup Part Two

Once again we’ve had too many good releases dropping into the inbox so here’s part two of our roundup for October featuring Arcatype, Silent Witness, Rockwell, Dub Berzerker, Soul Intent and more!  Continue reading

Midn8runner – Clear Truth EP [Bay 6 Recordings]

Bay 6 Recordings have really impressed us over their last few releases, with label owner Amphix showing a keen ear when signing up and coming liquid producers to his burgeoning imprint. Their latest release from Midn8runner continues that trend, with a pair of crisp liquid rollers buoyed along by warmth and feeling.

Soft instrumentation and old-school breakwork characterise both tracks, with the uplifting piano melodies of Silver Lining edging it out as the Dojo favourite. Check out the clips below and look for this one dropping at all good digital stores tomorrow.

Amoss – Shadow Theories EP [Dispatch Recordings]

Ever since 2012’s State of Suspension EP we’ve been waiting for the return of Amoss to Dispatch Recordings. We’re a bit surprised it’s taken this long, but their brand new Shadow Theories release has certainly been worth the wait.

While the EP treads familiar ground for the most part, sometimes evolution can be just as satisfying as revolution and hearing the the countryside duo’s sound mature proves to be exactly that. Their dark and gnarly style sounds as fresh and dangerous as ever on tracks like The Wayman Break and driving Fre4knc collab Vortice, a track that fans who have caught any of their sets over the past few years will probably recognise.

There’s room for something a little lighter amongst the grimey shenanigans too, with Viv May and C. Tivey coming aboard for the jazzy vibes of Stalling Theme before the release closes out with the thundering kick/snare riddims of Crooked Arm. Another top release from a production duo we hope will be around for a long time to come! Check out the clips below and hit up the Dispatch Store now to grab the EP on vinyl or digital.

Zero T – Dice Game EP [Fokuz]

Zero T has been a busy man of late, with an album out on Dispatch, a track on the new Soul:R EP and now the Dice Game EP for Fokuz. The title track fires straight in with a rolling techstep vibe, while flipside Thirty Four heads for more melodic territory with warm, inviting synths and hints of jazz in the mix. Tasty stuff from a producer at the top of his game! Check out the clips below and look for this one on vinyl and digital from October 23rd.

Classic Album: Seba – Return To Forever

Regular readers have probably noticed that we’re big fans of Seba here at the Dojo. The man’s ability to bend classic breaks to his will and layer them over fantastic synth backgrounds, combined with a versatility that sees him producing everything from dark amen smashers to beautiful rolling liquid has cemented his position as one of the finest names in the scene.

On to today’s #TBT feature then, and the fantastic news that Seba’s 2008 debut LP Return to Forever is being given the digital remaster and reissue treatment via his own Secret Operations imprint following the demise of its original home, Combination Records.

From the uplifting euphoria of Blaze & Fade Out through the driving darkness of Special Ops and out into the hypnotic syncopations of Crocket, Seba’s debut sounds as fresh now as it did seven years ago and punchier than ever thanks to the new mastering treatment.

The high energy tracks are broken up nicely by jazzy downtempo number Silicone and a Jesper Dahlbäck techno remix, and for an added bonus we get the slightly different 12″ mix of Blaze & Fade Out included too. Can’t say fairer than that! The LP is out right now via all good download stores so go grab a copy at your leisure.

Altitude – Levitate / Falling [Warm Communications]

Warm Communications’ new digital only line of releases has seen the label kick into a higher gear in terms of frequency of releases but thankfully the quality on show remains completely undiminished, and that’s never been truer than on their latest single from Altitude.

Having previously released music with the likes of Fokuz & Prestige, Altitude’s style channels the influence of fellow Warm Comms producers like Seba to create rollers drenched in reverb and mystique in equal measure. From the more up-front and entirely hypnotic vibe of Levitate to the deep, floaty synths of Falling, this is sheer class from start to finish. There’s also some nice use of classic sampling on the B side, with the vocal from Soundsource’s Take Me Up (most famously used in Omni Trio’s legendary Renegade Snares) making an appearance.

This single sounds like a producer confidently entering their stride, and we can’t wait to hear what else Altitude has to come! Check out the clips below and look for this one at all digital stores right now.

Calibre – Dreamz Dub EP [CIA]

Sometimes you just know a release will be good before you even hear it, and when the names on the tin are Calibre and CIA you can be pretty sure the contents will be worth your attention.

True to form, the maestro delivers four top notch new tracks for Total Science’s long running imprint, with Another and Believe It providing the soulful rollers, Posh Boy going in on the bassline grit and Dreamz Dub harnessing a playful dub bassline and ethereal pads for the EP’s deepest cut.

No surprises on this one then, but by now you should know if you worship at the altar of Calibre or not, and if you do his deceptively simple compositions haven’t lost their charm. Check out the clips below and look for this on vinyl and digital from September 18th.
