Regular readers will be more than aware of AutomAte; as one of our favourite small imprints, we’ve kept a close eye on their development over the past three years and greatly enjoyed watching Deficit and Esion move the trio of labels from strength to strength. They’re kicking off 2016 as they mean to go on with another top release from Fuj, so to find out a bit more about that and their plans for the rest of the year we tracked the pair down for a chat. Read on for all things AutomAte… Continue reading

Composite – Nesh EP [Context Audio]
Those who keep their finger on the pulse of the D&B scene in the south of England should already be aware of Context Audio, but for anyone who missed their inception announcements they’re a new digital imprint based in Portsmouth. In their own words, they are “a label focused on only serving up exceptional high grade drums. We like it deep and rolling, and we hope you do too”. Sounds good to us here at Dojo HQ!
Sounding even better than the press sound-bites are the clips for their debut release from Composite. The EP serves up three distinct tracks held together by fantastic percussion – those brags about high grade drums seem well founded from this outting at least.
The grittier vibes of opener Nesh and the softer liquid strains of Know Yourself are both solid tracks but for us the real star of this show is the crazy 5/4 drumfunk of Dispersion. Channelling the influence of Photek from tracks like Ni Ten Ichi Ryu into an utterly beautiful, confoundingly rhythmic and deeply unusual composition, this is one of the freshest tunes we’ve heard from a new label in some time.
The EP is due for release Jan 28th so keep your eyes on the Context Facebook feed for more details, and if you happen to be in the Portsmouth area on Feb 5th get yourself along to their label launch party.
Authentic Music Return!
Czech tech imprint Authentic Music have been pretty quiet until recently, but they’re coming out of hibernation in a big way this month with the release of two compilation EPs featuring some of the best tracks from the label back catalogue. The first one is out right now featuring cuts from Hybris, A-Cray, Bone and Peejay & Panorama, and if you like your beats crunchy and forward thinking it should be right up your street.
Besides the Square One EP we can look forward to the next one (you guessed it – Square Two) dropping from Jan 18th on Juno and Jan 25th elsewhere. Featuring another fine selection from A-Cray, Ower, Definate and Hemoglobin, this is equally worth a look if you missed the tracks first time around.
As if all that wasn’t enough they’ve also released the first teaser of their next project, Art of Deception. Look out for more news on this soon, but meantime you can check out the clip of Revaux’s satisfying chunky Solidify below.

Enei – Rituals LP [Critical]
Enei returns to Critical with his sophomore LP following up 2012’s excellent debut Machines. Rituals feels very much like a continuation of the themes found on Machines, with perhaps a slightly broader array of tones reflecting the evolution of Enei’s production in the intervening years.
The moody tech which formed so much of his debut LP (and indeed his discography) is still present here on tracks like Bad Proof and Iron Curtain, but there are also a selection of brighter cuts featuring some excellent vocalists. Frank Carter III (who you should recognise from Ivy Lab’s seminal tracks Oblique and Afterthought) turns in a typically deft and soulful performance on the playful, jazzy Moment of Now, while Charlie Brix steps up to the mic for up front roller Homeworld and the darker and more introspective Just One Look.
It wouldn’t be a Critical LP without a few label roster collaborations and these don’t disappoint either. Kasra & DRS get on board for a pessimistic ode to the music industry on Lessons, providing one of the album’s punchiest tracks. Elsewhere Foreign Concept gets involved on the more melodic and contemplative Forgotten Planet, fellow Russian producer Eastcolors joins Enei for the raved up flavours of Jungle Business and neuro badman Mefjus climbs aboard for the typically relentless Dead Space.
Polished and punchy but with more than enough variation to keep things interesting, this is a solid album from a producer at the top of his game. Check out a minimix of the album’s tracks below and hit up the Critical Store to pre-order on your pick of physical and digital formats; the LP drops Friday 4th December.
Aversive – Fortress EP [Black Tuna]
Vancouver label Black Tuna have been carving quite a name for themselves over the past year with top notch D&B, Glitch-hop and Bass releases from local producers and some bigger names too, and their latest release from newcomer Aversive shows the label moving from strength to strength.
Kicking things off with the heavy, old school tech stylings of Tech Itch-style title track Fortress and then moving into the aptly titled bass vibrations of Didgeridoo, Aversive certainly has a good grasp of low end heft, and the crisp production never seems in danger of becoming muddy despite all the bassweight flowing around.
You Know sees Aversive teaming up with fellow Canadian Miss Fudge for another hefty roller, while Night Sky closes things out nicely with a spacey, liquid tinged roller with a hint of tripped out psychedelia in the pads. All in all it’s a powerful statement of intent from a producer we’re sure has plenty more to offer! Check out the clips below and hit up your favourite digital store to grab this right now.
November Roundup
Time for another look at the best of the rest for the past couple of weeks with new releases from London Elektricity, No Rules & Torn, Hex and more…
Dojo Damager: AI & SCAR – Letting It Go
This week’s Dojo Damager comes courtesy of the Metalheadz camp as they wind up for the release of Artificial Intelligence’s new Timeline LP later this month. For the first LP sampler’s exclusive track AI have teamed up with fellow ‘headz alumni SCAR for a perfect blend of the rough and the smooth, and it’s been doing the damage here at Dojo HQ!
Lulling us into a false sense of security with a lush, soulful intro before piling into a scuzzy bassline and those indestructibly solid breaks, Letting It Go is sure to rip up any dancefloor with its pure rolling danger. Heavy business! Hit up the Metalheadz store to grab the sampler on vinyl or digital now and watch for the full album dropping Nov 20th.
Modu – Empathogenic EP [Alchemic Breaks]
Leftfield UK D&B imprint Alchemic Breaks return with their sixth release from Bristol beatsmith Modu. The Empathogenic EP features two nice chunky tech rollers with some quality atmospherics, but the real highlight comes on closing track Resonate.
Bringing together growling bass warmth, glitchy vocal cuts and a crooked little halftime riddim, this experimental yet eminently dancefloor-worthy track easily steals the show for us here at the Dojo. Check out the clips below and look for the EP dropping next week via all the usual digital outlets.
